Chapels and fountains of Carnac

Saint Michel Chapel

The initial St Michel Chapel was built in the 6th century and modified and restored over time.

It is located on the highest point of Carnac, at the top of a tumulus, a megalithic monument of imposing size (125m long, 60m wide and 10m high). From there, you can expect a magnificent view of Quiberon Bay and its islands, and the entire Carnac area.

About 300 metres away, you can reach Saint Michel's Fountain by a path that circles the tumulus on the left.

The chapel and its fountain have long been frequented by the wives of sailors who came to ask for favorable winds for their husbands at sea.

Legend of Saint Michel fountain

"The legend goes that if you have been robbed, you must go to the fountain on a Monday morning on an empty stomach. Throw pieces of bread into the water of the pool, pronouncing the names of those you suspect. If the piece of bread immediately sinks after saying the name, you have identified the thief !"

Village of Saint Colomban

Saint Colomban Chapel dates back to the late 16th century. It is dedicated to the Irish monk St Colomban who settled in Brittany around 610. He is the patron saint of the simple-minded.

With its granite houses, the small village of Saint Colomban has kept all its authenticity and plunges you far into the past ....

Like many other chapels, that of Saint Colomban is associated with a fountain located at the entrance of the village. Surrounded by small menhirs and two stone basins, this devotional fountain was used to cure madness and the heads of simple-minded people were dipped in the waters.

Saint Cornely and other chapels...

The site of the chapel La Madeleine was formerly a leper colony. The current chapel was rebuilt in 1976. Next to the chapel, a fountain, whose water is sought to cure fevers and skin diseases.

Other chapels are to be found in and outside the town:

  • Notre Dame de La Croix chapel
  • Saint Albin chapel
  • Saint Guénolé chapel

And of course, don’t forget Saint Cornely church in the center of Carnac, known as one of the most beautiful Renaissance monuments in Morbihan. Visits are organized there in July and August.

His Pardon was once the most important of Brittany, with people coming to have their herds blessed. Many pilgrims still come today, on the 2nd Sunday of September.
